Nuit Nile – experimental ambient group, fun to watch
Dry Socks –
Danny Fisher-Lochhead – alto sax
Ryan Blotnick – guitar
Will Mason – drums, fx
A chance meeting of three composers, Dry Socks set out to explore new timbres, haunting melodies and ecstatic polyrhythms.
Will Mason is currently visiting faculty at Oberlin, and is working on a PhD at Columbia which “examines electroacoustic music from the French spectral school in light of research into embodied music cognition, re-evaluating notions of timbral abstraction and reduced listening in the music and writings of Gérard Grisey, Kaija Saariaho, and Hugues Dufourt.”
… “Succeeds at fusing experimental rock and chamber music…The cathartic two-guitar attack has the feel of avant-rock, while the astringent harmony recalls experiments by Charles Ives. (Seth Colter Walls, New York Times)”
“..asymmetrical melodies and grooves, grinding harmonies, and atmospheric bouts of stillness.(Boston Globe)”
Danny Fisher-Lochhead recently moved to Mount Desert Island from NYC where he led a ten-piece avant jazz-rock group. He writes prolifically for small and large groups and is a great improviser. The keywords on his website sum up his creative leanings:
jazz chaos complexity compositional density experimental harmony improvisational large ensemble melody simplicity textural
Ryan Blotnick also lives on Mount Desert Island and has been in residence at the Apohadion as part of the Gravity Sessions. He went to music school in Copenhagen and played jazz and afrobeat in New York City for ten years. His latest album Kush features Michael Blake (of the Lounge Lizards, Ben Allison) and RJ Miller on drums.
“A moody, unforced album rich in nuances… the mastery of space and tone within an improvisational setting is an art few have truly mastered; with Kush, Ryan Blotnick has shown himself to be among such rare masters. (S. Victor Aaron, Something Else Reviews)”
