As autumn rolls summer into a submissive, wimpy defeat, come to the Apohadion for kicks.
Firstly, Big Black Cloud, from Portland, OR. Join the hard trip. With nods to surf, punk and psychedelia, BBC is a shredding barrage, a noise canyon. It’s also catchy enough to keep your feet alive and your head on a bob. Listen for yourself. http://www.myspace.com/herecomesabigblackcloud
To round loudness out, Haru Bangs rides a similar wave, save for the wave being born into the Atlantic. From our home, Portland, ME.
Dann Pell, a crafty fellow doing a solo thing from Philadelphia. Vaguely sounding like Animal Collective but not in a rip-offy way, more in a way where at first it’s a curiosity and then there’s a world. I don’t know what instruments he’s playing or how many boxes will be plugged into the wall or anything like that. All I can really suggest is if you like what he’s doing on Myspace you’ll probably like what he’s doing at the Apohadion.
And Hammer of Hathor. A family jazz duo. I think that their music, of all the music I just described, is the hardest to put words to. So I Won’t!
The Apohadion is located at 107 Hanover Street, tucked into Portland’s premier district, tucked into Portland’s patio. Cost of admission is 5 -10 dollars depending on anything. Keep alive Portland!

Last week, Anti-Friend Hut staged a short performance at The Apohadion that was intended for a live broadcast to a gallery in Los Angeles.
This third generation video represents only the first few minutes of this 10 minute performance:
Camera for the broadcasted video was operated by Kimberly Convery. Two other auxiliary cameras were operated by Miss Anelle and J. H. Gardiner.
Seated at a table in a room, The Anteater patiently awaits the attendance of his waiter.
A large Ant enters, lights the candle on the Anteater’s table and exits.
Soon, the Ant returns, pours a glass of water over the Anteater’s head, blows out the candle and exits once more. The Ant returns with a stack of menus, throws them in The Anteater’s face, and exits. Next, the Ant returns with a burning shoe. Next, a plate of marshmallows arrives, then a violin. While The Anteater busies himself with the violin, The Ant fumigates the room with billowing clouds of Anteater repellant.

This Sunday evening The Apohadion is happy to present: BJ Snowden and Dan Knudsen (with the possible inclusion of another act yet to be determined)
B.J. Snowden is a world renowned singer songwriter, featured in the book “Songs in the Key of Z”, along with the likes of Jandek, Tiny Tim, Daniel Johnston and other “outsider” musicians. B.J.’s songs are sweet, weird, catchy, and hilarious.
Check out the astonishing video for her hit “In Canada”
Dan Knudsen is an American artist who’s musical style has been described as a combination of folk, gospel and outsider genres. Since moving from Wheaton, Illinois in 1998 to his current home of Portland, Maine, Dan’s performances around the growing music city have resulted in attracting a dedicated cult following, a full-length tribute album and an annual indoor festival called, “Dan-a-palooza” in honor of the artist and his music. Check him out at: http://www.danknudsenmusic.com/
The Apohadion Theater is located at 107 Hanover Street in Portland Maine. We’ll start the show around 8:30 P.M. – Donations for the musicians and the space are gladly accepted.

Friday, the 6th of May, we present Alex Body from Iowa. Check him out: http://www.myspace.com/bodyislove. On night people records. Also performing is Drab Pony, a solo performance by South China’s Jeremy Robinson. DP is a collection of textures and loops to create songs doused with the Robinson touch. Lastly the legendary ANTI-FRIEND HUT has altered their plans of a cardboard fashion show and has set sights on a different level of performance to include a revisioning of the Apohadion’s stage, some cardboard and a musical tidbit. Expect more, of course, but expect to be surprised. Please bring a modest 5 dollar donation for the bands. 9 pm. We look forward to serving you this array of exotic musical fruits.

Two Amazing Shows: 4/28/11 Farewell to Mark Tipton With Aleric Nez and 4/29 Grass Widow : Broken Water : Village of Spaces : Rattlesnakes
Posted in Uncategorized on April 25, 2011 by theapohadion
First things first. April 28th, 2011 we present Mark Tipton, one extremely talented gentleman currently residing in humble Portland, Maine, but not for so much longer. Thursday, the 28th is slated to be a farewell to this sir as he performs the music of Bob Dylan with a star-studded crew of Portland All-Stars (including Joel Eckhaus, Carl Dimow, Dave Noyes, Aleric Vincent Nez, Sam Furth, and a full rock band with Max Cantlin, Jim Lyden, Gary Gemmiti, Cartwright Thompson, Ben Noyes, and Jimmy Dorrity). This won’t be your typical guy-with-an-accoustic-guitar at an open mic experience, but rather an intelligent arrangements of many different instruments and stylings. You don’t want to miss your chance to see Tipton live as he commands melodies from the bell of his horn; his presence will be sorely missed but we wish him the best of luck in NYC.
Look him up: www.marktiptonmusic.com
Opening the night will be Apohadion Recording artist Aleric Nez. Nez winds and releases tunes of impeccable and contemporary beauty. His soul could be the wit of a new folk generation while borrowing ingredients from old country and folk song scribes. His arrangements are spot-on every time, adding to the allure of his finely-crafted tunes. Aleric’s latest release on 12″ vinyl is a personal current favorite of mine, the penman present. Listen to his efforts:http://apohadionrecords.bandcamp.com/
Show will begin at 8pm. We’ll be asking for a 5 dollar donation for the musicians and The Apohadion.
On Friday, April 29th, we host Grass Widow with Broken Water, Village of Spaces and The Rattlesnakes.
Grass Widow (San Fran.), after making quite the name for themselves on their home coast west, have been migrating about this country, charming at every stop. Music that is never tired, weaving itself into and out of and into obscurity with just enough psychedelia to bring you to an ethereal plain with enough of a backbone to keep your heels close to earth with voices that flirt with the upper stratus. GW has appeared on the labels Make A Mess, Captured Tracks and Kill Rockstars (www.myspace.com/grasswidowmusic)
In town for the evening to add expanse to an already great show is Broken Water (Olympia). Broken Water combines shoegaze with something ungazed upon, touched with grunge. (http://www.myspace.com/brokenagua)
From Belfast Maine I’m very, very excited to have Village of Spaces back to town. Outsider folk music from the Beckman-Moon family. (http://ukeofspacescorners.blogspot.com/)
The Rattlesnakes, a favorite amongst local critics and fans to boot play this one as well. Despite the disclaimer buried somewhere on their Myspace profile that they no longer use that particular social networking site I think you can still hear some tracks on it. (www.myspace.com/therattlesnakes)
This show will begin near the prompt side of 8 pm. Please bring 7 or 8 dollars as a donation so we can give these guys all they deserve. See you on Friday.

Matt Rock is a fantastic accordion player playing a wide spectrum of folk music from New England, Appalachia, and eastern Europe. Matt will be be joined by the equally talented Ben Russell on the violin.

Saturday 4/16 at 8 P.M. .. an interesting Strange Maine show at The Apohadion –Here is what Skot has to say about the groups involved:
Solace Media Corporation Tourists are visiting from Cincinnati, I’ve seen them twice, and I don’t even know what to say, I seem to remember some beautifully beautiful movies, a lot of dancing, and some pretty good music, but both times I was left with that delightful, rare feeling of “what just happened?” New Hampshire’s state bird, Bird Organ take another fly over Portland to paint the top level of all of the parking garages white, and then buzz around in the rafter of the Apohadion for a while…..joining them will be the fantastic video artist Greg Kowalski ( ), a man whom I have literally seen make trees glow……..so, not one but two video projections for this show, bring your popcorn. Twilight People are back again, i’ll avoid describing them and let their website to the talking . Skeet Shooters are back by popular demand, this time as a trio (combining Skeeter Shooters with Skeet Shooting, Skeet Shoot Skeet) supposedly a melding of “booty music” and “musique concrete” this show promises to maybe be a bit more dancable than the last, but still incredibly “high art”. Starved electronics, 3 MC attack (featuring members of Visitations, id m theft able, ________, Special Ed, 3d Jet Scooter, AM Frank, Gay Camp, Euphoric Effect, Agent Provocateur, J.A. Laser, Mr. Chris and the Instant Animals, Vexations, Prisma, The Insider Pitch, S.A.G. Trio, and L.G.A.S.M.)
show should start around 8 pm, donations for performers encouraged.

Fat Shadow from Bloomington Indiana. Perhaps best known for the inclusion of Erin Tobey (fantastic solo career as well as major contributions to the band Abe Froman) Fat Shadow is a bit of a departure from Erin’s previous work. Combining elements of punk and indie rock, Fat Shadow create intricate and catchy songs perfect for our contemporary life.
Please bring down 5 dollars to encourage the touring band’s outbound travel. Please come at 8pm.
